Most aircraft constantly broadcast their position, altitude, speed and heading on 1090 MHz, a system called ADS-B. At my home in northwest Las Vegas, a small antenna, receiver and a Raspberry Pi pick up those broadcasts. The map below shows the planes my receiver is hearing right now, updated every few seconds. More about the setup is on the About page.
Keep an eye out for Janet flights (callsigns JANET plus a number), shown in gold. These white jets with a red stripe and no airline name carry workers from Las Vegas to restricted government sites such as Area 51, and they often stop reporting their position once they head north toward the test ranges.
